Why do some planters become scorching hot?

Two factors combine: material and colour. Metal conducts heat quickly and its surface temperature rises sharply in direct sunlight, especially in dark colours, which absorb radiation. Thick mineral materials (ceramic, fibre concrete) warm up more slowly and remain noticeably gentler to the touch under the same exposure.

Which materials should be prioritised in public spaces?

Where hands are likely to touch them—squares, forecourts, around schools and play areas—choose glazed ceramic and fibre concrete: their thermal mass keeps surfaces at a moderate temperature. Metal still has its place in shade, in light colours or where it is out of reach: positioning matters as much as material.

The role of colours and positioning

A light colour reflects radiation, while a dark colour absorbs it: with the same material, the difference to the touch is very noticeable. Positioning does the rest: a planter in the shade of a tree or facing away from the afternoon sun remains temperate, while generous planting will eventually shade its own container.

What about plant health?

Roots also suffer from hot walls. A generous volume of growing medium acts as a buffer, surface mulch limits evaporation, and a cachepot creates an insulating layer of air around the nursery pot. These simple measures protect both the plant and the hand that touches it.

Should metal be ruled out in full sun?

No: it simply needs to be positioned thoughtfully: in the shade, in light shades, or away from areas where hands rest (central islands, set-back rows). Metal also remains an excellent choice for its durability.
